Hydrogen and the Government of Canada

Image : Ontario Legislature

By submitting your interest in a solution to de-carbonize Canadian processes now and for the foreseeable future with out negatively affecting our economy please respond to the survey below..
*Please note the Canadian Government has stopped taking survey submissions. However I left this up here to show that the Government is aware of the issues and yet has not moved forward on any hydrogen strategic initiatives. FYI. July 2021

Lack of Government commitment

The Canadian and provincial governments talk about hydrogen adoption. But they have not yet taken any action in a meaningful way. See my letter to the Ontario PC Government below.

Letter to the Ontario Government: MinisterEnergy@ontario.ca

Our government needs to hear from us.

To The Ontario Minister of Energy

Hon. Todd A Smith

My name is Tony Germin and as a concerned citizen of Ontario I would like to impress upon you the urgent need for starting a Hydrogen Economy in Ontario.

Why Hydrogen you may very well ask? Well hydrogen is the only fuel the when used for heating or generating electricity, goes right back to the form from which it came from. This makes hydrogen the only truly sustainable and renewable fuel on this planet.

To elaborate, hydrogen once extracted by low or zero carbon green electricity like solar cells, wind turbines, geo-thermal, tidal (on the coastal areas), Nuclear and Hydro, by electrolization and  then when used in heating known as burning/oxidizing and when uses in Hydrogen fuel cells produces a  by product that  is Pure Water.

In other words using Green generated electricity in  a Water Electrolizer will produce Green Hydrogen, then when the Hydrogen is burned for heat extraction or inserted in a Hydrogen Fuel Cell for electricity generation the result is pure Water, again. No other fuel on earth has this property. This a well known  physical property of Hydrogen.

1 Kg of Hydrogen will produce approximately 9 liters of Water in  a typical automotive Hydrogen Fuel Cell for example. And BTW that water has no plastic in it just pure H2O.

So for energy sustainability and economic sustainability Hydrogen needs to be produced in Ontario not only to decarbonyze Ontario but ultimately the rest of the world and  Time is running out.

Just a quick point here this is not pie in the sky or some futuristic enterprise.

All over the world countries have been investing and moving to a Hydrogen Infrastructure. Germany, England, Chile, Australia, Japan, the US of A, and many others have been moving fast toward  decabonyzation using Hydrogen. The Swedes for example have been making Hydrogen and using it in Steel making instead of coal. Volvo Cars are now made with this very low carbon manufactured steel. Germany has hundreds of Hydrogen Fueling station as does California. Toyota and Hyundai make Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars and trucks now.

Our very own neighbor, Quebec has a 20 M watt electrolyzer. Air Liqude is the French company that has invested in this plant.

In any case Ontario's time to move to the Hydrogen Economy is passed due. A government backed attitude of investing in Hydrogen production is key to the decarbonyzation of Ontario, Canada and ultimately the planet. On that subject Fortescue Futures Industries an Australian company is here in Canada searching for Hydrogen projects to invest in. My understanding is that they are also investing One Billion US dollars in Hydrogen Hubs in Australia.

With a Hydrogen friendly government endorsement, private sector companies like FFI will feel more comfortable in investing in Hydrogen.

By the way Ontario is geographically and by Market access specifically, poised to be one of the largest Hydrogen producers in the world. Ontario has relative cheap Green Hydro power a good electrical infrastructure lots of fresh water and resides next to one of the largest markets in the world, the USA. Of course it would help if the Hydrogen Strategy included Solar and Wind electrical generation. But I believe that an investment in a Hydrogen infrastructure will inevitably spur on Solar, Wind. Hydro and Nuclear investment in this sector.

In closing I urge you to become world  educated and adopt a Hydrogen Strategy to coincide with what the rest of the world is moving to.

Best regards. Thank you for listening and have a very Mary Christmas to you and your familiarly.

Response from the Ontario Government

Response Letter from The Ministry of the Environment

Take note that the Ontario Government is Clear that they are only interested in developing Grey Hydrogen. It seams as they were very specific to address it as " low carbon Hydrogen ". Where we know for a Fact that Ontario can produce Green Hydrogen. This should be alarming.

My request for the policy of Hydrogen Production in Ontario

Also see my letter to the Ontario Government that was addressed to the energy minister and the Minister of economic development and the Minister of the environment.

Letter from Tom North

Tom North

We need to stop thinking and start adopting a Hydrogen Economy

Director, Climate Change Programs and Partnerships Branch at Ontario Ministry of the Environment,

Contact Tom North, ask him why we are so far behind in adopting a Hydrogen Economy
